This is a compostable polyester-based compound for extrusion blow moulding, supplied FDA compliant for the production of cosmetic and personal care bottles. In that process the melt leaves the die as a hanging tube, the parison, which the mould closes around before air inflates it against the cavity, so the compound has to behave as a self-supporting melt rather than simply flow. Cosmetic packaging is judged on appearance before anything else, and blow moulding is where that is won or lost. The parison has to hang without drawing down before the mould closes, or the bottle comes out with uneven walls, visible thin spots and a soft feel in the hand. What resists that draw-down is melt strength, the resistance of the melt to being stretched: a melt whose extensional viscosity rises as it extends will not keep thinning at one point, while one that lacks that response sags under its own weight and thins at the top. Whatever distribution the parison carries when the mould closes is then amplified by inflation, because the thinnest sections offer the least resistance and stretch furthest of all. This compound is formulated for that melt strength and for even wall distribution, in a compostable polymer system. As with any packaging resin, compatibility with the specific formulation should be confirmed by trial: surfactants, actives, essential oils and low or high pH systems all interact with packaging differently, and a compostable polyester is not inert to everything.
