Polyester wax is a synthetic wax built from ester linkages rather than the hydrocarbon chains of paraffin or the triglycerides of a natural wax. That structural difference is what gives it polarity, and polarity is what makes it behave differently from a conventional wax in a polymer. A paraffin or polyethylene wax is non-polar and works almost entirely as a lubricant, migrating to surfaces and reducing friction. The ester groups in a polyester wax give it affinity for polar surfaces, so as well as lubricating it wets pigment particles and holds them apart once they have been broken down. In practice that means a single wax addition can replace a separate lubricant and dispersant in a masterbatch formulation. It also has a higher melting range and better thermal stability than most natural and paraffin waxes, which is what allows it to be used in engineering plastics processed well above the temperatures at which softer waxes would smoke or volatilise. This grade is declared for PA, ABS, PC, PS, PBT, PE and PP, in plastics modification and masterbatch pigment dispersion. Supplied as a white powder in 25 kg paper-plastic composite bags.
