Gel Wax - Hard (Moulded Grade)

About This Product
Hard gel wax is not a wax in the chemical sense. It is white mineral oil, CAS 8042-47-5, gelled with a styrenic block copolymer resin, CAS 25034-86-0, into a clear, rubbery, transparent solid. The hard or high-density grade carries the highest polymer loading of the gel range, melts at 60 to 80 degrees Celsius and is processed at 110 to 120 degrees with a pour temperature of 85 to 95. The polymer content is what separates the grades and determines what can be made. A higher polymer fraction gives a firmer, more elastic gel with greater tensile strength, so a hard grade holds its own shape once demoulded and can be cast into free-standing forms rather than needing the support of a glass. It also suspends embedded objects, shells, beads, dried botanicals, without them drifting or settling while the gel sets, which is the main reason decorative makers choose gel over wax at all. Its clarity is its whole appeal, so bubbles must be managed by pouring slowly into a pre-warmed mould. Fragrance loading is limited, typically 3 to 5 percent, and only polar-compatible, gel-approved fragrances should be used, as unsuitable oils cloud the gel or cause it to weep. It is used in moulded transparent candles, embedded and decorative candles, display and novelty pieces and in retail craft ranges. Bio Green Wax supplies hard gel wax to specification on polymer content, melting point, clarity, penetration hardness and flash point.
