Rapeseed-Paraffin-Microcrystalline Wax Blend

This blend combines hydrogenated rapeseed wax, refined paraffin and microcrystalline wax, supplied as flakes or slabs and specified by blend ratio, melting point, congealing point, oil content and needle penetration. The microcrystalline fraction is the reason the blend exists. Paraffin and hydrogenated vegetable waxes are both made of relatively straight, regular molecules that pack into large crystals, and large crystals make a wax hard but brittle, so big candles crack, sidewalls craze and surfaces shrink away from the mould. Microcrystalline wax is made of branched and cyclic hydrocarbons that cannot pack neatly; it forms very small crystals and is consequently flexible, tough and slightly tacky. Adding it to a blend raises the melting point, improves adhesion to glass and to mould walls, increases oil-binding so fragrance and colour stay put, and makes the finished candle far more resistant to cracking and surface defects. The rapeseed fraction supplies renewable content and a European base, and the paraffin fraction carries fragrance throw and gloss. It is used in large container and pillar candles, moulded and sculptural candles, layered and decorative candles and in commercial production where surface rejects matter.
