This emulsifying wax is a blend of glyceryl stearate, CAS 85251-77-0, with PEG-100 stearate, CAS 9004-99-3, supplied as white flakes, beads or pastilles melting at 55 to 60 degrees Celsius. It is non-ionic and is among the most widely used emulsifier systems in personal care. The pairing works because the two components sit at different points on the hydrophilic-lipophilic scale. Glyceryl stearate is largely oil-loving and acts as the co-emulsifier and body-builder, anchoring in the oil phase; PEG-100 stearate is strongly water-loving and provides the hydrophilic pull that holds the emulsion together. Blending a low and a high HLB emulsifier gives a more robust interfacial film than either could form alone, which is why this combination stays stable across a broad range of oil phases without being matched to a specific oil. Compared with the cetearyl alcohol and polysorbate type it builds less viscosity of its own and gives a noticeably lighter, silkier, less waxy skin feel, which is why it dominates in lotions and fluid emulsions where the cetearyl system would feel heavy. Typical use is 3 to 6 percent. It is used in lotions, creams and body milks, sunscreens, hair conditioners, colour cosmetics and pharmaceutical topicals.
