PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil

About This Product
PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil is produced by reacting hydrogenated castor oil with an average of 40 units of ethylene oxide. It carries CAS number 61788-85-0 and the INCI name PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, and is supplied as an off-white to pale yellow soft waxy paste that becomes liquid above about 30 degrees Celsius in some grades. Its function is solubilisation, which is distinct from emulsification. An emulsifier disperses oil in water as droplets large enough to scatter light, producing an opaque lotion. A solubiliser forms micelles small enough that they do not scatter visible light, so the oil is carried in what appears to be a completely clear solution. That is the difference between a cloudy body spray and a clear one, and it is why this material is the default choice for putting fragrance, essential oils or oil-soluble actives into transparent aqueous products. It has a high HLB, works at low addition, typically two to five times the weight of the oil being solubilised, and is non-ionic, so it tolerates a wide pH range and is compatible with charged ingredients. It is also mild and is used as a viscosity and foam modifier. It is used in clear body sprays and mists, micellar waters, mouthwash, shampoos and bath products, perfumes and pharmaceutical solutions. Bio Green Wax supplies PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil to specification on hydroxyl value, acid value, saponification value, water content, pH and colour.
