Lanolin wax is produced by fractionating anhydrous lanolin, the greasy secretion recovered from sheep wool during scouring, and separating the higher-melting crystalline portion from the soft liquid oil. The result is a firm, pale yellow waxy solid rather than the tacky paste that raw lanolin forms. Lanolin is chemically unlike most waxes: it is built from esters of sterols, chiefly cholesterol and lanosterol, with long-chain fatty acids, rather than the simple fatty ester or hydrocarbon structures of beeswax and paraffin. That sterol content gives lanolin its unusual ability to take up several times its own weight in water while remaining a coherent phase, and it makes lanolin a genuine water-in-oil emulsifier rather than merely an occlusive. Fractionating out the wax portion keeps that character but raises melting point and hardness, so the material can structure a stick or a balm instead of slumping. It remains strongly occlusive, forming a breathable film that slows transepidermal water loss, which is the basis of its long use in nipple creams and barrier products. It is used in lipsticks and stick products, balms and barrier creams, ointments, hair dressings, polishes and leather care.
