Synthetic Beeswax

Synthetic beeswax is manufactured by blending esters, fatty acids and hydrocarbons to match the composition and behaviour of natural beeswax. It carries the INCI name Synthetic Beeswax, melts at 61 to 65 degrees Celsius like the natural material, and is supplied in white or yellow grades with the beeswax character formulated to requirement. The reason to specify it is consistency and supply. Natural beeswax varies with the hive, the forage and the season: colour, aroma, acid value and hardness all shift between lots, which is a problem for a manufacturer running a fixed formulation and a fixed shade. It also tracks an agricultural supply chain, with the price volatility and adulteration risk that brings. A synthetic grade is made to a fixed specification, so it performs identically batch to batch, carries no honey aroma to interfere with a fragrance brief, and can be produced in a defined colour. It is also free of the propolis and pollen residues that can trigger sensitivity. Formulators generally find it interchangeable with natural beeswax at the same addition, though the absence of natural aroma is immediately noticeable. It is used in cosmetics and colour cosmetics, balms and sticks, candles, polishes and coatings, and wherever batch-to-batch consistency is critical.
